PROGRAM DESIGN

After years of refinement, we continue to remain at the cutting edge of sport science.  Utilizing daily undulating periodization, we ensure that you train all physiological qualities on a daily basis, while adjusting intensity, volume, and modality to compliment the phase of your offseason. Our meticulously designed program is structured into 4-6 week blocks, tailored to the stage of the off-season and the unique requirements of each athlete.

HOW OUR PROGRAMS WORK

GENERAL ADAPTATION AND ACCUMULATION PHASE:

We kick off with a 4-week phase focused on building a solid foundation. During this phase, we prioritize high volume training to increase mitochondrial density, work capacity, and address any asymmetries or injuries from the previous season. Emphasis is placed on positional strength, technical proficiency, aerobic capacity, and movement quality, setting the stage for further progress.

GENERAL STRENGTH PHASE:

Following the adaptation phase, we transition into a general strength block. This phase targets neural recruitment, force production, and specific strength development while training the anaerobic glycolytic energy system. We aim to enhance overall strength and power, laying the groundwork for explosive performance on the ice.

POWER DEVELOPMENT PHASE:

In the final phase, we focus on maximizing power output. Training at submaximal loads with maximum velocity, we prioritize rate of force contraction and short burst efforts with high specificity. This phase is designed to enhance on-ice explosiveness.

Throughout our program, we prioritize movement patterns over specific body parts, ensuring a balanced and functional approach to training. Each day constitutes a full-body training session, preventing over-fatigue of the musculoskeletal and central nervous systems while promoting optimal recovery.

Our comprehensive programs encompass movement quality, technical proficiency, strength development, neural recruitment, power development and endurance, end-range strength and mobility, injury prevention, and energy system development. By strategically integrating these elements, we ensure that our players are fully prepared to excel in the modern game of hockey.

After an extensive playing career which took him through the Minor Hockey, Junior, and University ranks, eventually culminating in the professional ranks of Europe, Ilan Cumberbirch seamlessly transitioned into the realm of off-season Strength & Conditioning, working with NHL, College, and Junior players. Armed with a Bachelor's Degree in Kinesiology and Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist credentials, Ilan brings a wealth of expertise and first hand experience to Yard Athletics.

I have worked with Ilan for over 9 years, both as a business partner and as an athlete. Ilan has done an outstanding job developing his training knowledge and building comprehensive programs to work with a range of athletes, from young amateurs to NHL professionals. His off-season programs are very detailed and are broken down into four major phases, each of which are of equal importance. He can adapt any of his programs to each athlete's age, development level, and injury history. For professional athletes, he builds a strong base of strength and functional movement first and then adds a strength and power phase. These elements allow them to build their athletic ability and also to handle the intense demands of their season. llan has built a state-of-the-art facility for YardAthletics. Athletes have access to the best equipment available today and are surrounded by a passionate and knowledgeable staff of trainers.
