Exercise As Prevention For COVID-19
by Henry Gould – April 22nd, 2020
We’re all doing our best to settle into the “new normal”. Whether this involves washing your hands until they look like raisins, crossing the street if someone’s coming toward you, or doing an endless stream of dishes that never seems to stop, things that would have seemed perplexing to any of us in February are now part of our daily routine!
With cautious optimism things seem to be doing well here in British Columbia, and with Yard Athletics 2.0 on 307 W Pender coming along quickly, we can’t wait to unveil the new facility to our amazing community in the near future.
No doubt everyone is glued to the news and social media, which for better or worse updates us with so much new information it can be hard to keep up, or know what’s real and what’s phony.
Business Insider: “Exercise May Protect Against A Deadly Coronavirus Complication. One Expert Thinks It Should Be Recommended Just Like Social Distancing.”
According to research from Zhen Yan, Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise each day may contribute to the development of a key antioxidant that can protect against Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, a common condition among hospitalized COVID-19 patients.
It should be stated this was a review of past research, not something done in the last few weeks, but overall there is much positive science to support how important exercise is for overall health, particularly in the lungs which can be a weak area for patients suffering from COVID-19.
Additionally, the LA Times and others are also reporting the adverse affects that obesity is having on COVID-19 patients in the US. Sadly this is often part of a greater issue related to income inequality, poverty, and the lack of access to affordable healthcare, nutritious food, and the ability to exercise as part of a normal routine.
If you have the time and space to workout at home, there are some great resources from Yard Athletics that allow you to get some good exercise with little to no equipment.
